Thread: 2 barrel carb ?

    2 barrel carb ?

    Just thinking about it.
I have Mechanical advance distributor on order for my VW 1600 motor.
The vacuum advance just won't advance to the 28* OTDC at 3000 rpm to get the Full hp.
I'm looking at maybe a 2 barrel to add a few more ponies.
Can I just get an adapter and put it on and go?
    Something like a 5200 or a slimier small car carb. I have a ( I think ) p34 one now.
What increase could I expect ?

Before I can recommend the carb..Which heads do you have on that VW engine ?? Single or dual port ? Which mechanical advance distributor are you buying ??

That distributor will take the guesswork out of your advance and make setting it up much easier...There are two different style heads for those VW engines...I was wondering which style was on it{single or dual ports}.. There's a few good carb choices for your engine...Depending on which carb you choose it's either a bolt on deal or you need to modify the intake..When you have time get some pics so we can see just what you've got..

    Re: 2 barrel carb ?

That's the dual port set-up...Nice...I've got a holley bugspray 2bbl carb for that engine...Completely rebuilt ...With the aftermarket intake, dual port manifolds and even the air cleaner to go on that engine...Here's the original thread where it was rebuilt...http://miniairboatassoc.com/forum/sh...rb-for-the-084 I was going to convert this to fit the 084 but it's more suited to your engine than what I was going to do with it...Pm me I'll give you the details...

Even with all that what would be the expected increase be?

With the set up I have now I can get my 3 blade Competition Aircraft Ultra-Prop
with #11 pitch blocks to 2700 rpm on the motor which should be 2500 on the prop.
I have #18 that I would love to use.

    This is it running.

    Re: 2 barrel carb ?

To be honest I don't think you're going to find a magic carb to make a bunch of HP and torque appear without other engine mods...I'm not sure what write-up you're reading about the bugspray carb but at one time that was "THE" carb for the average owner to use on modified VW engines and made the most HP out of all others...Most of those holleys are now wore out and create more trouble than their worth with bad throttle shafts etc...Good ones get snapped up even today...I have a book titled "How to modify VW engines" and there's nothing but praise for them...Anyhow, fast forward to today and I'm sure you can find a VW forum and the guys will tell you the price for more HP from one of those engines it's not cheap...

you could always go to fuel injection....
just thought i would throw this out there.
like corky said, there are many ideas, out there, and a lot of good information that is readily accessible.
I know you will find a good solution.

I was looking at your pics again..You don't have much room there it's tight even with the one barrel...I was watching a show the other day it had one of the last years of the VW beetle production..Fuel injection was offered from the factory on that engine..I bet you could find one of those and upgrade your entire system to use it...

    Maybe.
Yes there is little room .
    was checking the other day.
The 3 blade ultra prop can only 3100 rpm.
59" =544 mph tip speed about Mach .71
    I'm at 474 Mach .61 now.
I would not need a lot.
