Have you ever worked with fiberglass before ??? I'm just trying to determine where you need to start... There's a wealth of info on the net... Here's an example of a major fiberglass repair{7 parts} and gives you a good idea of how involved some repairs need to be...Hopefully yours is a simpler repair than something like this..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N02A9uFMMB4

Hope you don't mind I modified your pics to spin them so everyone can see what you're dealing with...Well, you definitely have your work cut out for you...You'll need to make sure the hull gunwales and bottom are supported to keep them true as you are working...It appears the one side has a crease up high ?? How is the actual bottom itself ???

The actual bottom seems solid just don't know if this hull is worth fixing or do I build an aluminum hull and if so what size is best for a o84 dd build with a 4 blade 64" warp drive

    Re: Glass hull help

That would be great hull dimensions for an 084...Now you need to determine if you're up to fixing that hull...You could bring it back to life it's a matter of time more than money IMO...I'd read and learn everything you can about these types of repairs and make a decision..
As far as an aluminum hull : I can tell you from experience building an aluminum hull isn't an easy task especially if you're not good at welding steel to begin with...Aluminum is tough to weld and unforgiving...Papee states that a 5ft bottom is optimal for the 084 and as you can see{from the various builds on this site} the lengths are anywhere from 10 to 14ft depending on the intentions of the hull...

    Re: Glass hull help

OK then...This is strictly my opinion...Based on all the info so far I'd probably build the aluminum boat...Even though that hull is great dimensionally for a DD 084 engine you'd be way ahead in the long run building the aluminum hull for the 084, keeping it light, and passing it on to your son...The hull in those pics will take a lot of time and work yet in the end you'd still have an old, repaired hull...If you build them for a living you could have one together probably faster than the time to dismantle,repair/replace components for the old hull..

    Re: Glass hull help

The hull length can vary from 10 to 14 feet depending on how much buoyancy you need...I'd want more than 10ft if you plan on running with 2 people and some hunting gear...So yes IMO 11ft would be better than 10..I'm in the finishing stages of my build and although I built a 14ft hull with an 084/reduction Papee is running his 14ft hull with a direct drive and he gets pretty much the same MPH as some of the reduction builds...

So it really comes down to just how much room you want to move around in the boat...

    Re: Glass hull help

I just had a look at your other thread showing the engine, stand, and other hull pics...Man, that's a tough call on what to do here...The hull really doesn't look bad from the other pic...I'd be real tempted to fix it , deal with the engine , and give it a test run with what you've got there...

That's great you can run across airboats that need a little attention in your area...Lycoming, Pa.,upstate from here, used to have all the engines sent back to them for repair and replacement..That kept our area supplied with their engines for the airboat projects..I've always liked that brand of engine...

    Re: Glass hull help

my brother in Cordova, had a airboat similar to that style of hull. with the smaller Lycoming on it. I had a lot of fun playing on that back in the day. (with the both of us, we had to make 2 trips to haul the moose out that fall). looks like you have quite a few directions that you are going. and it looks like a lot of fun.
