    Prop Distance From Transom

    Hey Guys,

How does the distance from the transom affect the characteristics of the boat. Trying to maximize space on the boat by pushing the prop/motor as far back as possible, even to the point where the prop is behind the transom. Is there a rule of thumb for prop/transom spacing and what effects does it have on the characteristics

May be a weight factor too.
    I'd like to know too

    Re: Prop Distance From Transom

Prop distance is not as important on a mini. On these low HP setups we try to keep the prop above the transom to take full advantage of the prop. It also depends on where you need the weight distributed. As far as clearance goes, I've always been told by the old timers that the clearance should be the width of a beer can. With that said, you don't want it to be even or past the transom.

With that said, the beer can rule applies to the 5/5/5 rule? 5" from the frame (prop flex) 5" from transom, 5" from rudder? does that include 5" diameter clearance to the cage as well?

Width not height. About 2 1/2 inches. With the bigger boats having part of the prop below the transom to keep the center of gravity low they are often more because of prop flex. With ours being above the transom it's not as critical in that measurement.
