where to look

Does anyone know where in south Louisiana I can find a 12, 16 or 20 hp horizontal shaft motor. I. Looking all over and would prefer to buy from a person and not over the internet. Even if it's a five hour drive to get it .

Harbor freight, Lowes, Home Depot all have engines in that class.

Look on CraigsList. Look for photos of people selling mowers or tractors with other equipment in the photos. Send them an email asking if they have anything like you want.

Another option...Last year I snagged an electric start Kohler off Ebay...It was located within an hour from me...I got the complete engine for less than all the parts cost needed for the starter conversion....
