one suggestion, make sure the starter motor has enough torque to crank the motor over, I attempted to go this route, and the 3 starter motors I had, they all were direct drive, they would spin the motor over real nice, with the spark plugs out, but as soon as I put the plugs in, it was just wasn't happening. maybe they were all old and tired, but they had no problem turning over the snowmobile engines, that took I them off of. and I really didn't want to fork out the money for a new starter motor. so I went a different route.
I see the one mentioned here made by Harley, looks like it has a planetary drive. which none of mine had.
I have a couple of friends that have a few Harleys, I just didn't dare ask them if I could borrow any of their starter motors.
this is just what i came up with.
good luck and have fun
The setup I have works just fine. And yeah I think the harley starter has some kind of gearing in it to add torque.

Hey Bart what ring gear are you using? It's definetly bigger in diameter then the one I'm using. I might switch to that size for my next setup. What is the overall diameter of that one?

it would be a Polaris # 3083075, don't have the diameter at the moment, I just had to shave into the bolt chamfer about 1/8", and put a little flat side on the machine bolts, it was a snug fit on the inside, I will take some pictures of it tonight when I get home.
I wouldn't pay the prices that you will see o E-bay, I have purchased whole snowmachines for what some are wanting for just this ring gear.ft

I finally got my rudders together. I just have to trim the end pieces to make it more cosmetically pleasing and more stream line..

OK so it's been a long time since my last post...and I have some very drastic change in my build plan......I managed to find a good deal on 2 continental engines....one an a-65 and the other I believe is an a-80. Both were sitting in a guys barn for a very long time, but I feel with some love they will be great engines. My plan is to try to get at least one engine out of the 2. Also I managed to do some trading and I upped my dad's hp to a Continental gpu PE-60 which is about 90hp. So his heavy boat is going to scooting along quite nicely in the near future...I built a stand for his engine yesterday now we have to get a prop and mount a starter and alternator and he will be good to go........having said all that he will be selling his 084 engine complete ready to mount on another boat with prop and starter as soon as e get his new motor running good. I will also be selling my whole boat, motor, reduction drive, prop when I finish the reduction drive. Hope I can still be accepted not that I'm no longer going to be using the 084 engine..

Those are a big step up from the 084 !!...I'd be excited about using it too...And you certainly are welcome here Steve for any projects you've got going we'd love to see the build..I still consider them a big brother to the 084 and alot of the general info could be crossed over to our applications...

Thank you for that. I'll post pics of the tear down of these engines as I go along. From what I can tell the 084 with a reduction drive spins the same prop an a-65 runs so should be nice. Just more fuel burn rate.
