I've changed the pitch twice so far ... at first it went to 4000 rpm so I went from 10 degrees to 15 degrees which gave only 3000rpm so I increased pitch to 13 degrees where I'll leave it for now until I do more testing. There is a pronounced decrease in planing ability with just a few degrees more pitch.

Corky ... I am pleased with the noise level as compared to my old direct drive boat and the muffler tone is very acceptable. I have been checking with the neighbors on the lake and they tell me that the noise level isn't too bad.

Those speed readings are in deep water right?? I think if you can find some shallow say 1' or less without rocks of course you'd prob be up around 40 mph for sure. All in all your boat came out very nice and it seems to run pretty good from the videos. Just watch that steering in deep water with an open boat..

There are several possible sources for either a new surplus or used 084. The price varies widely so do your research before buying. I got mine from Sacramento, CA on EBay for a good deal but shipping freight was expensive. Saturn Surplus is one of the main parts suppliers and they do usually have engines. You see their add at the top of the page on this website. There are also aircraft builders who use them ... check out the 4a084 user group on Yahoo.

I'm not sure about a used hull but Marty Bray is the builder down in Live Oak, FL. You can also check with Chuck at Airboat Pros online. You may want to consider an aluminum hull if you're planning on running in rocks though ... not sure how the fiberglass would hold up in that scenario.

The "Circle S" reducer is made specifically for the 4A084 engine so it bolts directly to it. Bruce, as far as I know, does not deal directly with the public. I bought mine through Chuck at Airboat Pros. You can go to their website (same name) and you'll get his phone number. It's around $1300 + shipping but it's very well built

Wow, that is some serious money. You said you had a builder for your hull; do you have plans? Where can I find them; I can do all my own fab.

OK! I have bit the bullet; I have procured a NOS 4A084. Now I need to find plans for a hull that I can build or find a good used hull.
    Any ideas?

Great! You do realize that now you've passed the point of no return Full speed ahead and damned the money! Can't help you up here on a hull though ... I can probably count on one hand the number of airboats in Michigan's U.P. Good luck and I agree with aewrigh's comment to keep watching the Southern Airboat site for a deal.

    Re: aerokirk's build

byu ... that's either a pencil mark or cat hair ... both face plates are solid 1/2" thick aluminum that have been cnc cut to precisely fit the 084. I now have 9 hours on the boat and it's performing flawlessly. I like the zero slip factor of the cog belt as it transfers all the energy from the engine. My only issue so far has been the original carb which I believe is not getting all the HP capability out of the engine. I am looking into EFI but it's pretty expensive from what I can see.

    Re: aerokirk's build

yes there are notorious for that issue like they lose total power and shut completely down on ya , but to correct it it may cost a bit to get it right seem like with everyone using them they would have the remedy for it.... my motor was takin off my boat due to that issue then i sold the boat in fact i had a pretty nasty divorce and the motor stayed there at the ex's house along with a suzuki 700 engine .....i didnt want to see her so i left it there figured it was cheaper then the hassle of trying to recover it i got the prop but she only allowed one load from there so it was guns and my clothes i got away with lol
