Project The Tank II (The Frog)

We're getting materials ready to start a new boat for my uncle. After looking all over for a suitable Jon boat we've decided to build one from scratch. This means a brand new welder for me. I decided on the MillerMatic 211 Autoset with a SpoolMate 100 series spool gun. We'll start as soon as I get the bosses walk-in closet done. She's been after me for two years so getting it done should give me a free pass to some garage time.

The hull will be pretty much like mine at around 14 ft with a 5ft bottom(no chines) and 20 inch sides. I may put on my 032 to give him some stick time before I put on a 084. This will be the same as mine when done, a direct drive 084 with a Arrow Props 52 in stick prop. The hull will have a less sharp rake on the front, I think mine is a little too much even though it is really stable to fish from when float fishing. He's pretty excited and I must admit I'm a little tingly too about getting to build the hull.

THIS BOAT IS N0W FOR SALE.

    Re: Project The Tank II

Watch out fellas I've been thinking again. I've been trying to come up with something that would make my boat design different than other hulls. When you see one of my boats you know it is mine kinda deal. I really haven't come up with anything yet but I have been seriously thinking about a step hull. I have done tons and tons of reading on step design, the way a step works and where how and when a step would be located.

While there is no real formula for this I have an idea. This idea depends on if my theory on this whole deal is correct. I'm thinking of the step as a new or second "leading edge", as far as the facts go the best lift is right at the leading edge. SOOOOOOOOO...

If I know where a certain hull runs on the water on plane that SHOULD be the perfect spot for this step or second leading edge. Getting that step right at the point of plane that the boat runs should give me the best results. Now to figure out how big and what shape to make the step. I may not put this on my first hull because of the changes I'm making but I am seriously considering an attempt at one for the next one. The advantage to this should be a god gain on a mini airboat setup. Of course if mt theory is off I'll have some patching to do.

My first welds with the new welder, I think I'm ready but I need to try the spool gun next.

Well, I got my cart made for the welder and did some aluminum test welds with the new spool gun. I'm pretty close but I still need to do some fine tuning with the wire speed and my pattern speed. I had almost no residue and had "that sound" you need when you have it right but I'm ready to go!

We're going to go ahead an put the 084 on it right away.

I had a chance to get out and get the rake figured out and get the jig made. The wife is keeping a pretty tight lesh on me, I am building a walk-in closet for her and it was supposed to be done a week ago. I should be able to get started Tuesday or Wednesday on the stringers.

    Re: Project The Tank II

After spending the morning on the river fishing in my boat I came home looking for something I could do on the new boat. I had enough particle board left over to make a jig to bend the main hoops for the prop cage. Easy bending using the jig but it takes some tweaking to get them to stay where I want them. Now I have to go get more conduit to bend the second one.

    Re: Project The Tank II

I ordered the Prop and hub from Arrow Props today and the Aluminum yesterday. I got the aluminum from the same place Dan got his. Pretty good prices and free shipping! My uncle got the motor from ebay but we don't know much about it. The guy never had it started. It looked good from the photos with very little discoloration on the exhaust pipes and no soot in the pipe. Hopefully it will be OK but even if I have to replace the top end it will still be a good deal for the price. The Aluminum should be here on Monday.

I got my material from Eastern Metal Supply. IF you do order from them delivery may be a problem depending where you live. They don;t really deliver to residential customers unless it is on their route and easy to get to. They do have free delivery though.

I got the sides cut today and got the material on the table for the bottom. I made all the measurements and got them on the sheet ready to cut tomorrow. I most likely will start assembly tomorrow. I did have some reservations about what the material would do when I start beding it to shape so I made a scale model from paper. It all worked out as I figured. No photos really, it's just a couple pf pieces of cut aluminum but for those who like photos, here is a photo of my paper boat.

Thanks Papee. Dont think delivery will be an issue. I have a business address in Gainesville, Fl - besides Lakeland is only 2 1/2 hours from me worst case. Interested in what you chose for thickness/finish for hull bottom and sides when you get it all figured out. Good luck with the build, looking forward to seeing your progress. Starting mine closer to fall/winter, just bought a "beater" bass boat and doing a few mods to it right now.

    Re: Project The Tank II

Got some more done today. I got the bow pieces tacked on and got the second piece of the bottom on. I also got a few other small pieces cut like the small piece in the front. Tomorrow I'll get the rest of the sides done and hopefully the front piece. These photos don't show all I have done, I had quit for the day and came in to do some more figuring then decided to go back out for a while. I overlapped the bottom to make a small step right where the boat will run when on plane. Mine also has one there, I'm not sure if it really helps but I know it can't hurt.

Everything is just tacked for now, I'll go back and finish welding when I have all the parts on. I did finish the bottom weld because it will be hard to get at once the boat is closed in. With my fake knees I can't kneel so I have to work around it.

Got the transom on today. Things will slow down a bit now, I have a lot of catching up to do as far as welding. I'll be picking up the angle for the top of the gunnels and deck bracing on Monday. I have to put the boat on the floor next to get the stringers in. I'll probably weld all the front part of the boat at the bow and work on the front deck to break up my welding time. The deck will also help keep the shape of the boat.

    Re: Project The Tank II

I had to look back to see what the last update was and eek, it don't look like I got much done today and I worked at it pretty steady. I made and installed the backwash tray on the transom some corner bracing and braced the bow. I did do a lot of figuring for the bow platform and a few other things coming up.

    Just one photo today.

    Re: Project The Tank II

More progress, I picked up the angle for the top edges today and got it on. I also got the framing done for the front deck. If I have a good day tomorrow I should be able to get all the parts tacked on. I still need to finish the stringers, tack the upright braces on then it gets 5 braces under the backwash tray on the outside and two braces on the inside bottom of the transom to stiffen it up. After that it's a mile of welding to get it done and ready to take to the river for a leak test.

Now I see why these hulls cost so much, this is a lot of work.

EDIT: I still have to find a piece of tubing for the transom plug. I'm hoping to find someone who has a piece left over. I only need 4".

My boat was 15'9" when I had the 032 on it. It would get on top if you had a little wind in your favor and start out in skinny water. It would stay up as long as you didn't go too deep. Any more than 3 ft of water and it would fall off plane.

The boat is 14ft long, has a 5ft bottom and a 76" beam, with 20" gunnels. Going by the sheet weights I'm guessing it weighs around 250 lbs. I'm going to try to take it up to the quarry scales if I have time this week when I get all the finish welding done. Here it is with all the parts on, just need to weld all the corners now.

    Papee
What hp did you figure you were getting out of the 32?
How about a material list that you are using on theis hull
and it looks like you are useing a channel for your ribs ,why those instead of t bar.

    Re: Project The Tank II

I don't know what hp but it was pushing a 3 blade 48" prop at 12 degrees. I think that puts it around 25-30hp.

I'm using the channel because in my opinion the t bar is just too hard to walk around on. This is a fishing boat so there will be a lot of walking around.

    3) 5x10 sheets of 6061 or 5052 1/8 whatever your budget allows
    50ft) 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 angle
    60 ft) 1x2 structural channel
4") 1" inside diameter tubing for drain 1/4" wall
I got 4 sheets but it doesn't look like I will be using the 4th sheet. I may when it comes time to make the dash.

    That's about it.

    Re: Project The Tank II

I'm waiting on a piece of tubing to put in for the drain so while I wait I'm going to start on the rigging. Once the tubing gets here I put it in and take it down to the river for a leak test. I doubt there will be any because it is welded inside and out and I've gone over it about ten times to look for any places that it may leak.
