    fish mouth jig

i made this jig this morning and thought someone may be interested in the idea..
i put a 5/8" carbide router bit in my router table. drilled a hole on the drill press through a piece of hard wood ( 5/8"). securly fastened the block to the table. slowly feed the pipe until its fully notched..

it worked better then i thought it would. i cut about six samples in about a minute. the 1/2" is so thin the carbide should last for at least one boat.

next i plan to add blocks for the different angle to the table top so i can do all my fish mouth cutting without moving anything..

    Bandit,

Looks like you got a good thing going there. If I build another boat I might just try something like that, but first I need to buy a router, ...and a carbide bit, ...and build a router table, ...and build a jig . Oh well!

    Keep up the good work,

    Dave

    Bandit,

It sure looks like it'll work for 'ya.

I seem to enjoy doing this the hard way... Plus, like Buster said, I don't have the router table, etc.

    And I'm past that part.

You still may want to consider using Carbide Burrs though. They're 1/4" shank, like a router bit.

Just something for you to keep in the back of your mind.

Nice idea for straight cuts but... If you have an angled piece you need to notch the orientation would be 90* to your table, in other word the angled piece to be notched would have to be held at an upward angle and from the looks of it your bit is not long enough. This is why I use a drill press, so I can easily move the position of the notcher. Here are some bits that I use in my drill press for notching tubing for my roll cages.

    Papee,

    Very good argument.

I'd looked at jigs, and fixtures, to do it, but Chuck showed me the EASY way. Use a die grinder, with a carbide bit, sized to the piece that you want to join to, and "eyeball" the angle. It ain't got to be absolutely perfect. Pretty close is good enough. Yep, you're gonna' make some mistakes, so you try again.

After a while, you start getting it right the first time. Duh.

    Thanks,

    Duane

    Papee,

I don't think I have ever run across bits that long. How much do they run, and where do ya get 'em?

There are some cheap notchers out there that would be great for Conduit.

They are made to be used with a drill.

I buy my bits local but you can find them on the net,
