I tried without success to re-read a PM after I had submitted it.

Can that be done, or is a PM gone without any record, after it's once sent?

In your profile settings make sure you have "save a copy in sent file" I have this turned off for default so it won't load up the PM boxes so fast. You can switch it but your limit will fill up faster and you will have to clean your mailbox more often.
