cylinder removal and valve spring compressor

    Hi all...

Been wrenching on the 84 a bit and the cylinder pressure is all over the board but I knew it would be. Looking like 120, 112, 98, and 80. I knew the one was going to only go 80.

Good news is inside the crank is very clean.

For the price I am probably going to put in new pistons and cylinders and polish the valves up. I can pic up a new cylinder for about the same price the local shops want for just honing them. Not a lot of difference in price between a ring set and a piston set either.

So anyone find a good valve spring compressor tool for these or are we on our own to build one.

Any tips for removing the cylinders... there are a couple of stubborn ones... of course.

    Thanks

    Hey Mike,

When I found a dropped valve seat in my 084, I took the valves out of the head with just my old "C" type valve lifter.

    No special equipment needed.

    Good Luck. Dave

Thanks Dave, Did you mean a C type valve spring clamp?

Thanks Buster... I dont have one of those but I do have plenty of c clamps and some junky sockets laying around I can cut the sides out of...that should do it.

Any clever ideas on loosening up those pesky cylinders that just want to stay stuck. Here is the score: Cylinders 1, rubber mallet 0.

    Mike,

I didn't have much trouble with my cylinders being stuck. If you think you need a mallet, maybe you could "ease" them loose with a piece of 4" x 4" instead? Just a suggestion.

If you can't get your valves apart with a home brew spring clamp, you can probably get a local shop to lend you one, or do it for you at a minimum charge. It should only take five minutes.

Or, maybe this is a good time to treat yourself to a couple shiny new tools

    Mike,

Around here, the auto parts stores have a tool loaner program for those specailty tools that you'll not need very often. The way it works is that you basicly buy the tool, then take it back for a full refund.

I've done that a few times for things like that.

    Duane,

That's right, now I remember I got a ring compressor when I did my 084. I couldn't find my old one. I was just gonna buy it, but I
didn't like it as well as my old one, so it returned it for a refund

Re: cylinder removal and valve spring compressor

Good ideas guys... I gues I threw out the tool loaner program because the only compressor the next door, and next to next door part stores carried was the "wheel puller style" and those do not fit on the 84. Needs to be a lever or c clamp style.

I will try out the next to, next to, next door auto parts store up the block from my work.

The first cylinder I pulled came right off, as right off as a cylinder will come, but the second has little interest in being removed. In all honesty I have only fiddled with it for about 20 minutes.... Was hopeing for a D&B miracle quick fix solution but I guess some things have to be done the hard way... that aint all bad.
