    An unusual engine

There's an unusual engine on EBAY right now. I don't need it, but it is an interesting design.

Edit: A plus for it is that it already has a starter. Sorry Buster.

    Duane,

That IS, an interesting engine, but it's only 20 hp. I wonder if that is at 12,000 asl, like the 084?

Don't know what we could do with it, maybe a good rotary lawnmower engine?

    Dave,

    Or maybe a super weed-eater?

Yeah, it is kinda' low powered for our needs, but still interesting.

Konig is a German company now out of busness. Deiter Konig was a legend in Pro outboard racing (fuel motor). I have the outboard version in my shop. I raced outboards for 25 years. Deiter got into the Ultralite aircraft engines in his later life which turn out to be his final venture. While testing one of the engine he was developing it seized and crashed taking his life. Don't know if you can still get parts anymore but if it is as good as his outboards its a winner.

    rbengines,

What little I read indicated that a Canadian company has taken up the torch for the Konig radial ultralight engines. Check the EBAY posting again for more info if interested. There was a link to the Canadian company there.

For airboats it's not enough HP. I went back and read the e-bay ad. The company must have bought the rights to sale under that name. Too bad it's not 40 HP.

I think it is short a few cylinders.

    Papee,

Yeah, the Konig does seem to be missing a few cylinders, huh?

I was just knee high, so I don't remember it all, but seems like my Dad's Stearman was a 7 cylinder radial engine. I "think" it was a Pratt and Whitney. It's been a LONG time ago.

    Re: An unusual engine

I stand corrected. Dad's Stearman was a PT-17, and according to Wiki, it's engine was built by Continental, NOT Pratt and Whitney.

"The Continental R-670 (factory designation W-670) was a seven cylinder 4-cycle radial aircraft engine produced by Continental displacing 668 cubic inches and a dry weight of 465 lb (211 kg). Horsepower varied from 210 to 240 at 2200 rpm. This engine was used on many airplanes in the 1930s and 1940s. The R-670 was widely used in the PT-17 Stearman primary training aircraft of the U.S. military.[1]"

Sorry about that. The CRS is getting to me.

    The radials are cool looking.

Revisited them when researching the rotary engines. They produce significant sound and if I remember right they suck almost as much fuel as they do air.

    Dang, I resemble that remark.

Hey RB... did you by chance ever live in the Mesquite area? Meet a few outboard racers there in the mid/late 80's.
