My first attempt applying Frog Spit

My first attempt applying Frog Spit did not turn out as well as I would have liked. But it wasn't a disaster either. I ended up with some light spots, and some heavy spots (from puddles), and some runs. I still have a quart left, so I think that I can sand down the heavy spots and runs, re-tape it, and put on another coat tomorrow.

I was applying it with a 4" short nap roller. At Chuck's advice, I devided the Frog spit so I could mix and apply it one quart at a time. (Good thing I did !)

    Before beginning prep:

Checking hull to make sure it's flat. It was thankfully. I had one small spot that was about 1/32" low. I figure that wasn't enough to worry about.

    While sanding:

    After peeling off the tape:

It was a bright, warm, low humidity day. That stuff started drying FAST. I was working as fast as I could, but it was setting up even faster.

It rolls on very thin, so requires more than one coat. Plan to use a fresh roller for each coat. Trust me on that. It'd be even better if you could have someone spray it on for you.

I started peeling off the tape as soon as I was finished rolling. And that was almost too late. Overall, I'm happy with the result.

    Hey Duane,

Did Chuck happen to mention what kind of a gun you could spray it with? Is it thin enough To use my old Binks #7 guns? I was thinking it was thicker, and maybe would have to use an undercoat gun.

    Buster,

Uh, it never came up in our conversations. I don't have spray equipment suitable for this, and was planning to manually apply it anyway, so I didn't ask.

You'll have to ask Chuck. Sorry.

Hey Duane, You can't apply another coat without sanding it down again. It has too much selicone in it and want stick. If you sand on a thin spot, tape it off and sand all the way to the tape. That's why we apply the complete gal. at one time. I spray on thin layers to keep it from running but i don't stop spraying. Spray on the 2nd coat while the 1st pass is still wet. I use a gelcoat cup gun and a # 7 Lid. I heard of people using a hopper gun that you spray ceilings with and use the # 7 Tip.
    It looks good Duane.

Re: My first attempt applying Frog Spit

    Chuck,

I'll do some carefull sanding tomorrow morning on the high spots, wipe it down with acetone, and then step back and give it another look.

It may look different to me tomorrow morning compared to this afternoon. I was hot, tired, and aggrevated that it didn't come out pristine.

    Thanks for the advice,

Re: My first attempt applying Frog Spit

    Hey Duane,

From here it looks great. I hope mine will come out as good. I think I will try spraying mine first, even though I don't have a gelcoat gun, or a ceiling unit. If all that fails, maybe I'll end up with a roller after all.

I guess I've got a bunch of bodywork to do before I get to that point.

    Chuck and Buster,

It didn't look quiet as bad to me this morning. I carefully sanded the high and rough spots, waxed it, and put her back on the trailer.

I'm ready to get started on rigging now.
