Anyone try an electric clutch?
New guy here. Have been mentally building an airboat for awhile, and have entertained the idea of using an electric pto/lawnmower clutch on a lawnmower engine. Engine mounted below a driven prop shaft, clutch on engine. Thinking this would give me a "neutral", if you will, so that one could dock or stop, leaving the engine running, but the prop not turning.
It would definitely need multiple v-belts, or a cog-type drive belt, that would probably require a custom made pulley.

Just wondering if anyone has tried it and failed or succeeded.

Re: Anyone try an electric clutch?
Hello and welcome to the site Roger...A low mounted engine would definitely be more stable...And the electric clutch would be a great idea...I'd pick out the one that would take the most amount of torque..
Re: Anyone try an electric clutch?
There's a company in Utah (Mud Buddy) that used an electric clutch on their special outboard motors. These motors run upwards of 70 hp.
Re: Anyone try an electric clutch?
Thanks for that, BB. I'll have to contact them and ask how it worked out, and what type drive they used.
