Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Dave,
If you look around a bit, in the gyro related places, you can find some folks that swear BY them, ;thumb; and some folks that swear AT them. ;bawl;
The difference seems to have something to do with how much money they spent on making them reliable. Or whether they had one of the "one trip" drone engines, or one of the later ones, that was built for a longer life.
But like Wildfowl mentioned, they weren't especially economical to run, or very quiet.
Doesn't really matter, because they are even more obsolete than a 4A084. :o

Mike,
Hush 'yo mouth ! :&&:
I bet Buster has already got a "starter thingey invention" figured out. ;stir;
Actually, from what I read, there are other Busters that did figure out how to add not only a starter, but a drive for a main rotor pre-rotator. I didn't find pictures, but I did read about them.

Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
If you guys come up with a suitable, cheap, high output engine, I bet I can figure how to get a working starter on it, before you can come up with the right prop and reductiohn for it. ;thumb; ;thumb; ;beer;
Even if it hasn't got convienient mounting places ;stir;
Dave
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
I was born during the day but it wasn't yesterday... NO BET..NO WAY. Your to good Buster.

Dave,
:&&: :&&: :&&:
Here's a "cheap" high output engine for 'ya. I'm not too sure about suitable though.
"Steve’s Turbine Powered Airboat Project"
http://www.validate.net/turbine/
He only paid $500.00 (+250.00 S&H) for his first 160 HP engine. :&&:
But he ran into some minor problems during developement. ;bawl;
It's an interesting read anyway. I'd like to see how it performs.
Duane
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Duane,
You're right, it's an interesting read. If I was about thirty years younger, I might get interested, but it would take me that long to understand it.
The piston engine type airboat are challanging enough for me.
Dave
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
The ones that built turbine powered airboats should have rode on some airboats first an they would have seen that they want work too good. Throttle response is too slow. You have to be on and off the throttle alot to make winding turns.
Chuck
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Chuck,
I did question them being suitable for an airboat, didn't I? ;thumb;
But I bet one of them would be fun, in a LONG straight line.... once it kicks into it's power band, it'd have to snap your neck. WooHoo !
Chrysler, and GM, others, and even Toyota played with the idea in automotive applications back in the 60's and 70's. They just didn't work out because of the slow throttle response, and other things...

Problem is, my camera has a video mode, but no sound. :( It wouldn't be the same without sound. ;rasta;
I'll try to find a real video camera to borrow, and get it done this coming weekend. I promise. ;thumb; ;thumb;
Duane
I had both good and bad luck this past week.
For example,
Bad news: Since I'd used up all of my vacation time, and comp time, I was the ONLY guy in my department that was at work today, well for most of the week. Bummer. I had to deal with a lot of stuff that I had no idea about the correct way to handle it was.
Good news: Someone else can fix whatever I screwed up. ;garfield;
Bad news: I had no luck finding a "real" video camera to borrow. (none of my co-workers were there to ask)
Good news: I discovered that my digital camera DID indeed have a sound recorder. I learned this by pulling out the manual.
Bad news: So I go to get the camera, and can't find it. We've looked everywhere. The best I can figure is that it fell out of my jacket pocket last week-end when we were buying gas in Hillsboro.
Good news: The memory card was in the USB reader, because I was showing the boat pictures to my BIL on his computer. And the USB reader made the trip home O.K. in my pants pocket.
Good news: I found a brand new, newer version of the same camera on EBAY for $76.00, shipping included.
Bad news: You guys will have to wait a little longer for the Airboat noises video.
Ya'll have a HAPPY NEW YEAR. ;thumb; ;thumb; ;thumb;
Duane
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Yeah... me too Duane,
Good news is I set all this time to work on the 84.
Bad news Christmas blizzard.
Good news blizzard stopped.
Bad news newyears snows again with bitter blistering cold weather. (took a bobcat to clear the shop drive)
Good news snow thrower engine still working great.
Bad news weld broke and housing separated.
Good news I got to use my welder and welded it up good.
Bad news city announced if your mail box aint clear by now it wont be until the snow melts. Spent full day plowing out mailboxes.
Good news thats all done.
About as close to working on the boat I got in at all was wondering if anyone has ever put frog spit on a snowblower shoot? Pondering that kept me going. UGHHhhhhhh.
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Hey guys,
The replacement for the lost camera was delivered by my friendly UPS guy today. :)
Just in time to take snow pictures tomorrow morning. ;bawl;
They're predicting a "light dusting", but I remember the last time they predicted that...
Duane
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Duane,
Glad you got your camera, but "light snow" pic's won't be much news with Wildfowl out there reporting about his "light snow" etc.
He's making me appreciate Minnesota winter (How could that be?) ;rasta;
Forget the NC snow, but first chance you get, we are all waiting for the Airboat noise video :&&: :&&: :&&: ;thumb;
Dave
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Dave,
No, I haven't forgotten about the airboat noises video. ;bawl;
Since I promised to do it, I will.... I guess.... ;rasta;
Duane
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Hey Duane quit sending me emails and get working on that video. ;stir; :&&:
I think you are just trying to take my attention off the video.
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Video? WHAT video? :&&:
I've been trying to figure out the new camera, in between your emails. I bought this camera because it's just a newer version of my lost camera, so stupid me thought that I'd already know how it worked.
WRONG. But I'll get it figured out.
Duane
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Looks like I'd better get this fixed or you will have the distraction. I don't want to be a distraction to your progress.
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
O.K.,
I tried, but the audio on the new camera is very BAD. It's a Nikon L20 point and shoot digital, that also has a movie mode. It's great as a point and shoot camera, but it comes up very short on audio quality.
I was hoping it'd work out, but it didn't. Now I'll have to go back to finding a decent real video camera to borrow.
How'd I get into this mess anyway?
Duane
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Duane,
How you got into this mess, falls under the heading, "Open mouth, insert foot". ;rasta;
I know, I've spent a lot of time trying to learn that myself.
Just think, you can look back in future years, and laugh ;thumb; ;thumb;
Dave
Re: It's the Duane and Buster show!!!
Dave,
Yeah, I know. ;bawl;
I just wish I didn't have such big feet sometimes. :&&:
