I have several 4A084-3 motors and I'm rebuilding one, I see in the manual that it states the piston arrow must go in the same direction as the rotation of the motor, I've had several people tell me different so I need advice before re-installing the pistons, can someone verify this arrow on the piston going in same direction as the motor rotation?

Goldenadept,

Here is the excerpt from the 084 maintenance manual:
NOTE:

Before positioning connecting rod on crankshaft, ensure arrow on piston is in direction of rotation. See crankcase area to left of cylinder for reference rotation arrow.

Thank you that's what I thought but no one believed me and told me to position them up toward motor

I have one more question the torque ratio is 24 to 26 in lbs for the piston bearings but when I do this I can't turn the block to get to the next one is this ratio too much

If you are referring to connecting rod caps they are 24-26 lbs ft not lbs in.

is there any way you could call me later today in regards to the slick magneto timing? I spun it many times and could not get a spark on #1 330-417-0856 I will be available at 6:30 EST

Missed this until now. I'll be at a family gathering tomorrow but I'll try to slip away and call if you're a available. I really don't have much experience with the internals though.

Hi golden
Do you have spark n any plug wires? If not you may need to test your condenser, test or set your points gap or just give the points a light cleaning up with fine emery cloth. you may also need to use the same emery cloth to clean up all the contacts on the distributor and rotor button. Which is what I needed to do to get any fire from my mag.

God luck.

Mike.

I put the new slick magneto in, I have fire on #1 plug, when I lined up V to V with TDC, I got nothing, am I supposed to line V to O on cam gear? I was also thinking it could be the control box? Everything is new except cam and crank I never took them out

The different versions of these motors seem to have different cam markings. What I did was get the engine in the number one cylinder position. I took the magneto out and turned the mag by hand until it fired on number one. I just held the wire close to metal on the boat for this. Once I got the fire on number one I backed it up then put it in. there is enough rotation to get it in time if you are off a little. There is a copy of this procedure in the thread of mine about replacing the mag.
