I tempoararily installed and tested the Tiny Tach that I'd purchased for my 4A084 this afternoon. The trick to using one of these is to open up the shield in one of the spark plug wires and wrap the pickup wire around the insulator inside. I chose #1 cylinder, but any would work.

The Tiny Tach support guy recommended that this be done at the plug end of the wire to help prevent multiple / false pickups from other cylinders.

The pickup wire:

You can't see it in the picture, but the shield is still connected on the back side.

At speed:

I shut down after running for 10 minutes:

When it comes time to install it on the boat I'll trim the excess pickup wire and paint it with liquid tape.

This is Tiny Tach model # TT226NR-4C. Please note that this is not the same model as used on the Briggs engines.

It was very satisfying to run the engine again this afternoon. I didn't run it long because I still haven't installed my temporary mufflers. :o

At some point I'll borrow a hand held tach to see how accurate it is.
